Context: The 2009–2011 Bed Bug Crisis

Between 2009 and 2011, New York City experienced an unprecedented bed bug epidemic that became a national news story. Major retailers, hotels, university dormitories, and residential buildings across the country were reporting infestations. The story was covered on front pages and nightly news broadcasts worldwide.

As one of the first dedicated bed bug inspection companies in New York — and the nation — The Bed Bug Inspectors and founder Jeremy Ecker were frequently sought by journalists for expertise, comment, and on-camera interviews. The photo of Jeremy Ecker with Freedom, the detection beagle, was distributed via Getty Images and AFP to newsrooms internationally.
